Abstract

Heavy metal contamination is one of the most important and complex problems facing today's society. The need to minimize this pollution has led man to study the variation in the chemical characteristics of the waters. Heavy metals require priority attention both by science and by technology, due to the high toxicity load and the risks to human health that they produce. That is why this work aimed to determine the concentration levels of heavy metals (Ni, Zn, Cu, Sn, Pb, Cr, Pb, Hg, Co) in sediments of points of the Tínima and Hatibonico rivers, in the Cuenca San Pedro, in the province of Camagüey. In a first stage, the waters were shown in ten points distributed throughout the San Pedro basin. A qualitative analysis was performed on these samples based on the development of color used in a column filled with an absorbent based on zinc sulphide. The results of this stage reflected that in eight points there was contamination by heavy metals. To establish the level of contamination, in a second stage it was decided to take sediment samples from the points with anomalous results. The quantitative determination was made by Atomic Absorption Spectrometry with a flame, except for mercury, which was determined by EAA with cold steam. . The results showed that the concentrations of Ni, Zn, Cu, Sn, Pb, and Cr are higher than those established by international regulations.
